Fully-electric classic Mini goes on sale in the UK

classic-mini-electric.jpg

For those who are lovers of a classic Mini but are also eco-conscious we’ve got some good news! An all-new electric classic Mini has gone on sale in the UK.

Recently revealed at the London Classic Car Show, the converted car has been retrofitted to include a new powertrain, battery and charging port.

It has been developed by electric conversions specialists Swindon Powertrain, and a such, has been labelled the Swind E Classic Mini.

The original engine, gearbox and fuel system have all gone and in their place are a 110 bhp electric motor, a 24kWh battery pack and a charging socket.

Because the fuel tank has been taken out, not only is the car now zero-emissions, the boot space has increased and now offers 200 litres.

However, because of the extras that have been added, the weight of the Mini has increased by 80kg. Saying that, it’s still a relatively light car at just 720kg.

It seems that this electric Mini is best used as a city or village car because the range is down at 125 miles for a single charge with a top speed of 80mph.

What else has been changed?

  • USB ports in the cabin
  • Underfloor heating
  • Heated leather seats
  • Heated front and rear windscreens
  • Choice of 6 colours

Optional extras include:

  • Electric front windows
  • Power steering
  • Air conditioning

Only 100 will be made so this car is pretty exclusive. Which brings us to the price. Due to the limited nature of the car, prices start at a staggering £79,000.

Swindon Powertrain’s managing director, Raphael Caillé, said: “This is the first time an electrified classic Mini has entered production.”

“The classic Mini has such a special place in people’s hearts, not only in the UK but around the world.

“The packaging of Sir Alec Issigonis’ 1959 design was truly ground-breaking and now we are making it relevant again.

“Its compact size and good visibility, together with contemporary performance and handling, makes it a car you’ll want to drive in the city and put a smile on your face.”
