Can you drive a motorhome on a car licence?

Before you take the plunge and buy a motorhome, it’s probably worth checking if you’re actually eligible to drive one on your current driving licence. 

For the most part, the year you passed your driving test determines whether or not you’re legally allowed to.

If you passed before 1997…

If you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997, you have a C1 category entitlement on your licence, which means you can drive a vehicle up to the weight of 7,500kg. 

This should cover you for most kinds of motorhomes, but not the larger “American RV” types. 

If you passed after 1997…

If you’re under the age of 70 and passed your driving test after January 1st 1997, you’re automatically allowed to drive a motorhome. 

Your licence encompasses both B and B1 categories, which allows you to drive a vehicle up to the weight of 3,500kg, as well as tow a trailer that weighs 750kg behind it. 

The standard weight for most motorhomes is up to and around 3,500kg,  so you’re covered in this instance.

When you reach 70 years old…

When you reach 70, you’ll have to renew your driving licence before you take to the wheel of your motorhome. It’s worth noting that if you renew your licence, you’ll only be allowed to drive motorhomes up to the weight of 3,500kg.
