New electric city bike with 65mph top speed hits the road

rm1s-1

British electric motorcycle manufacturer Maeving has unveiled its new model, the RM1S, with 65mph top speed and 80-mile range. It costs £7,495, and it can be ridden on a CBT licence.

Maeving’s first model, the Maeving RM1, has been the best-selling road-legal electric motorcycle in the UK since its launch and one of the (if not the) best-reviewed electric motorcycles on the market, despite a top speed of just 45mph.

The RM1S is a natural step up from the RM1. It is still learner legal, but is powered by a 7kW motor, with 10.5kW peak output (more twice the power of the RM1). It also features two new 2.6kWh removeable batteries with a 30% increase in capacity over the existing RM1 model, and you can either remove the batteries to charge them, or charge them onboard.

What hasn’t changed is the retro-cool look of the bike, and the RM1S retains the design language that has made the RM1 so popular. The bobber-style seat, long wheelbase, and elegant 19-inch wheels are familiar, but the central housings have been re-designed to give the RM1S a more purposeful stance.

All Maeving models are designed and built in Coventry, by a highly experienced team of engineers who have been responsible for some of the greatest British motorcycles over the last quarter of a century.

Co-founder Will Stirrup said: “The RM1S is the bike we have been asked over and over to build by those riders who want a zero-emissions motorcycle that looks like an RM1 but is capable of highway speeds.

“We’ve worked extremely hard to ensure that everything that has made the RM1 so popular with our customers is carried over to the new RM1S, while delivering the greater performance will mean it can be used in a much wider variety of use cases.

“The original Maeving RM1 has been a huge success for us and, for many riders who stay within inner city limits, it will remain the perfect motorcycle. Adding the RM1S to the collection provides an electric motorcycle for those that need to cover wider geographies at higher speeds.

“It’s an overused phrase, but we truly believe this is a game-changer: an EV that you can purchase for less than the cost of a monthly Oyster card, that can be used for the vast majority of one’s travel needs, with all the joy and convenience that motorcycling brings. We’re incredibly proud of it.”

The new RM1S model is available for pre-order now, with deliveries scheduled from March 2024.
