Vienna
Starting off in Vienna is a good idea because there’s a lot of culture and history to soak up. There’s the Museumsquartier, which features the Leopold Museum, Kunsthalle Wien and the Museum of Modern Art. Vienna is also famous for being the home of Sigmund Freud and you’ll be able to visit his apartment where he lived from 1898 to 1938. Animal lovers should check out the world’s oldest zoo, founded by Franz Stephan in 1752.
Kahlenberg
Once you’re done with Vienna, head north and you’ll come across the Kahlenberg hill. This grassy area is an ideal place to relax. As well as offering spectacular views of the Austrian countryside, Kahlenberg features a small church and restaurant built in the 1930s. There’s also a viewing tower that was named after Princess Stephanie of Belgium.
Liechtenstein Castle
This 12th century castle is located near the town of Maria Enzersdorf. Surrounded by the Viennese Forest, the structure looks like something out of a fairytale. The name of the castle means ‘bright stone’ and it has a gothic appearance, with high towers and wide windows. Liechtenstein was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1529 and 1683. Then, in 1884, it was rebuilt. Today, the castle is used for the Nestroy Theatre Festival.
Steyr
Austria is known for its picturesque old towns and Steyr is a wonderful place to visit. Start in the town square and take in the view of the Gothic buildings. One that’s worth seeing is the Bummerlhaus, a medieval mansion that dates back to the 13th century. You’ll be able to absorb the culture of Steyr by checking out Castle Schloss Lamberg and the Museum Industrielle Arbeitswelt.
Gesäuse National Park
Nature lovers will appreciate riding through the Gesäuse National Park. The scenery ranges from limestone peaks, to mountain pastures. If you’re looking for classic Alpine vistas, then you’re guaranteed to get some of the best views in the National Park.
Salzburg
After a long journey, Salzburg offers the chance for some relaxation. The town is best known for being the setting for The Sound of Music and the birthplace of Mozart. Some of the best venues to visit in Salzburg include Mirabell Palace, Nonnberg Abbey and Schloss Leopoldskron.
