Norton announce plans to go electric

Dr Robert Hentschel

The age of electric is coming, and keen not to be left behind, Norton Motorcycles are the latest brand to commit to developing the tech, announcing a 30-month project to accelerate its net-zero automotive ambition.

And talking of ambition, Norton are going pretty big on their electric future, saying that the machinery will have the ‘traditional Norton design DNA, but with modern twists introducing industry leading innovations and digitial solutions.’ Norton also mention about current machinery offering either range or performance, and say that this project will eliminate that compromise, as the range will look at ‘delivering race performance and touring range’. Now that’s a pretty big claim, if ever we heard one.

In order for this to happen, Norton has been awarded funding through a government scheme, dubbed the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) 19. This scheme has been put in place to assist businesses in automotive in advancing their low-carbon offering, which Norton is fully behind. They will be working with specialist project partners, including Delta Cosworth, HiSpeed Ltd., Formaplex Technologies, M&I Materials, INDRA and academic partner WMG, University of Warwick.

Norton Motorcycles CEO, Robert Hentschel said “This significant funding investment is a momentous milestone for the brand as it marks the beginning of our electrification journey and fulfilling our ten-year product plan. Norton is an exemplar of modern luxury and unafraid to challenge the status quo, innovating for the future of mobility while staying true to our British heritage. It also brings into focus our desire to support the UK in its mission for a net-zero automotive future.”
