What electric bike is A2 compliant, has 106Nm of torque, is 135kg ready to roll and is packed with some seriously premium parts to back it all up? Well, from September, Zero’s new FXE is the answer...
Electric motorcycles have come on leaps and bounds since they first hit the market all those years ago, with Californian company Zero Motorcycles really spearheading the charge (pun intended) in recent years. And now, for 2021 they’ve released their FXE: a lightweight Supermoto style machine, that will be yours for £10,800 OTR, with the government Plug In Electric Vehicle Grant. That makes it one of the cheapest full sized electric motorcycles you can buy today.
The FXE is a more futuristically styled version of Zero’s FXS, one of their most popular models in recent years. It is powered by the same brushless Z-Force 75-5 motor with a 7.2 kWh Li-Ion integrated battery pack, although a different controller means that the FXE is A2 compliant, where the FXS can be ridden on a CBT. Electric bikes are all about the torque, more than the power, and the FXE pumps out an impressive 106Nm, with 46 hp of peak power. Although they’ve kept the battery fairly small to keep the weight down, Zero tell us that it’s still capable of about 100 miles of city riding too, and when you need to charge it, all it takes is a standard three pin-plug socket. On the open road, that range is likely to be more like 60-70 miles.
As far as components go, the FXE is equipped with some fairly premium goodies, including Showa suspension, J.Juan brakes, Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres and a shed load of technology too. The 5” TFT dash can be controlled by a new operating system, that means you can change everything from the amounts of torque to the top speed on offer, all through an app. They’ve also given it some funky aesthetics, to finish off the package.
