Royal Enfield ‘Goan Trippy’ with modified Classic

Summer might be starting to become a distant memory, but that hasn’t stopped Royal Enfield from developing a modified motorcycle to transport us all back to the summer of love.

The trippy looking Goan Classic is described by the Indian manufacturer as ‘a free-spirited expression of the wild, bohemian machines, and the custom counterculture that shaped motorcycling in Goa in the 1970s and ‘80s’. We’re not totally sure what that means, but one thing is for certain – you won’t be blending into the background riding one of these!

Shown as a custom project at last November’s Motoverse event in Goa, the £4719 machine is a stripped back interpretation of Enfield’s 350 single cylinder machine, with chopped fenders, apehanger handlebars and a floating solo seat creating a classic bobber look.

Rather than painting it black, as so many would do, it’s at this stage where Royal Enfield have really gone to town. With cool whitewall tyres on tubeless spoked wheels, combining with that distinctive teal and orange livery, it’s a factory custom that looks like it could adorn the cover of an early ‘70s motorcycle magazine.

Royal Enfield describe it as a ‘wild child’ in its marketing spiel, although with only 20bhp on tap and those laid back ergonomics, it’s probably more chilled out a wild one. We’ve ridden various iterations of the single-cylinder J-series Royal Enfields, of which the Goan Classic is a member, and while they’re no speedsters they’ve got loads of character. You can read our review of the Bullet 350 here.

We expect the latest derivative, which Enfield describe as a limited edition in Europe, to be more of the same. Unusually for a cruiser the Goan Classic combines mid-mounted footpegs with those semi-high ape hanger handlebars, and while the solo seat looks cool it also comes with a pillion pad which can easily be bolted on.

Explaining what the company is trying to achieve with the new model, Royal Enfield boss Siddhartha Lal said:

“The Goan Classic is a heartfelt tribute to the spirit of freedom and individuality that Royal Enfield has championed for decades. To me, this motorcycle is an embodiment of the cool, laid-back Goan moto-culture, and Royal Enfield’s passion to build motorcycles that are more than just machines, and are a means to self-discovery and expression.

This motorcycle feels right at home, not just on the streets of Goa, but brings the relaxed, and easy Goan vibe to free-spirited and freewheeling riders everywhere”

A range of dedicated accessories allowing owners to further customise their machines will also be available, with an alternative rider seat, fancy handlebar grips, ‘bar end mirrors, windscreen, alternative handlebars and foot pegs all in the options box. As standard there are some neat touches you’d probably not expect on a sub £5k bike, like aluminium switchgear, a USB-C charging port and Royal Enfield’s very effective Tripper navigation system.

While not likely to be Royal Enfield’s biggest seller, we can definitely see the Goan Classic winning the heart of more than a few bikers with its distinctive look and competitive price.
