Piaggio and Christian Dior have collaborated to create a limited edition version of the iconic Vespa scooter, as well as a range of exclusive accessories.
Few details are currently available regarding the scoot, which will be based on the pricey Vespa 946, as it will not be available until spring 2021.
Piaggio, owners of the Vespa brand, says that there is a natural synergy between the two companies, beyond the fact that they were both founded in 1946.
Maria Grazia Chiuri, Creative Director of Dior women’s collections, has got the pencils out to design the latest special edition of the 946, featuring colours, designs and finishes in keeping with the fashion house’s other products.
The 946 was first shown in 2012 as a high end heritage model (the 946 moniker paying homage to the 1946 introduction of the Vespa name). Despite being powered by a modest 125cc, three-valve, engine the fashionable scooter has always commanded top dollar for scoots that can be ridden around town on L plates.
Over the years, Vespa has sold the 946 in limited runs, of 946, often in similar collaborations. A few years ago a partnership with another fashion house saw the arrival of the £9,671 Vespa 946 Emporio Armani and although no prices (or indeed if it will be sold here in the UK and Ireland) have been announced we’d expect it to be upwards of £10,000, more than twice that of Vespa’s more mainstream GTS Super model.
As with previous 946 models, the detailing and finish on the Dior scooter looks exquisite. There’s also a matching helmet and quaint top box and, whatever your thoughts on a £10k scooter, it certainly does have a premium feel to it.
Piaggio says that the scooter will first go on sale in Dior boutiques around the world in spring 2021, no doubt as a must have accessory for the fashionable Parisian and Milanese men and women about town, with some being sold at selected Vespa dealers later in the year.
